A founding partner of Farmer Purcell White & Lassiter, PLLC, Jonathan Farmer has more than 18 years of experience representing clients in a wide range of matters. His practice areas include Federal and State criminal litigation, Federal and State criminal investigations, commercial litigation, and tort litigation.
Mr. Farmer’s Federal Criminal Defense practice focuses on the representation of clients charged or investigated by the Federal Government or its agencies with criminal activity. He has effectively handled multiple complex white collar cases, public corruption matters, fraud cases, drug related offenses, and a variety of other federal felonies and misdemeanors. Mr. Farmer has also successfully represented individuals and companies who were the subject or target of a federal investigation. Additionally, Mr. Farmer has conducted multiple internal investigations on behalf of clients and utilized the results of these investigations to influence prosecuting decisions.
Mr. Farmer also has a thriving and successful State Criminal Defense practice. He has effectively and capably defended clients in a wide array of felony and misdemeanor cases, including DUI and driving related offenses, drug offenses, theft and fraud offenses, probation violations, homicide, and a variety of other matters. He has also represented clients who were the subject of State government investigations.
Mr. Farmer’s civil litigation practices focuses on commercial litigation and personal injury matters. He has successfully represented clients in all manner of business disputes, achieving the desired results at a reasonable cost. Additionally, he has won several large awards from defendants in personal injury cases, including negligence claims, premises liability claims, automobile accidents, and other such matters. Mr. Farmer has also represented clients in class cases, derivative matters, and shareholder litigation in both Federal and State court.
Mr. Farmer was raised in Nashville and received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Tennessee College of Law in 2000. Prior to becoming a founding member of Jones Hawkins & Farmer, PLC in 2008, Mr. Farmer served as an Assistant Metropolitan Nashville Public Defender May, 2000 until September, 2003, when he entered private practice and joined the law firm of Farmer & Luna, PLLC.
Mr. Farmer is an active member of the Nashville, Tennessee, and American Bar Associations and the Tennessee Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys. He is a regular lecturer at Vanderbilt University School of Law’s Trial Advocacy program, and has authored and presented Continuing Legal Education courses to other attorneys.
Mr. Farmer is an attorney on the Criminal Justice Act Panel, has served on the Boards of Directors of Woodmont Christian Church, Dismas House of Nashville, and Volunteer Tennessee, and been a member of the Harry Phillips Chapter of the American Inn of Court.
Mr. Farmer is married with two children. He remains active in civic and community activities, including volunteering at Hands on Nashville, Room at the Inn, and the Nashville Food Project. He is also an avid triathlete, having completed multiple Ironman triathlons.
